Skull and Shackles
Nonjo San was born under a different name to immigrant-merchants in the city of Ilizmagorti on Mediogalti Island in the Shackles region. From an early age, life was tough for him in this rough city of pirates. His parents were murdered by hitmen, and his young sister captured, when he was only 5. He had witnessed the crime, and new the culprits included an assassin of the feared Red Mantiss Guild. The criminals must have forgotten, or overlooked, that there was also a son in the family. Of course, he would never forget. After the crime he wouldn’t speak his old name, and called himself only “boy”. Years of difficulty, work, and abuse in “orphanages” followed. At first he was assigned menial work, and then after he grew some, hard labor aboard the ships in port. Surprisingly, and despite the conditions, he maintained a good nature and a warm heart. He was haunted, though, by memories of that early crime, and so jumped at the chance to join the Red Mantiss Guild when he was approached. He was bold, and from within he thought he might uncover proof about the crime, or at least a motive. If not, he could at least harm and disrupt their operations, hopefully without being discovered. So, he played along and received 1st-level Ninja training from the guild. Among the guild, he was known as “Boy-do.” He performed a few small thefts to gain their trust, and operated as a lookout for a few jobs, but before long was sickened and distraught over working with the scumbag criminals. So, he set up a ruse that included his own fake death, while at the same time revealed evidence against his immediate superior, causing headache and embarassment for the guild. Since then, he’s been in hiding, working as a sailor under a new name “Nonjo.” Hiding his true nature as a Ninja, and only when and where he can safely keep his cover, he works to thwart evil, and organizations like the Red Mantiss. He presents himself as a professional sailor, and spends as much time at sea as on land.
Nonjo is chaotic good, but is comfortable with the rough and tumble way of the Shackles. He is gritty himself, and used to the salty life, but is extremely disciplined, mainly to hide his secret identity. He is cordial and talkative, and uses his diplomacy, along with his Ninja skills, to interfere with the more wicked pirates and guilds. He considers himself a bit of a pirate-of-pirates, robber-of-robbers, a Robinhood-of-the-sea, and seeks to help the goodly folk. He gets more satisfaction in thwarting the greedy, wicked and malign, than attaining wealth or power for himself.
